The Synopsis
The basic premise for this commercial is that The
Government Doesn’t Want You To Read My Side of The Story.
The Investigation. Part I. My Side of The Story is a book
that is based on the wrongful conviction of Nicholas
Zimmerman, an innocent man serving 40 years in prison for
a crime he didn’t commit. In the past, several New York State
officials have behaved unprofessionally in trying to prevent
Nicholas from releasing the book. The events by these
officials will now be re-enacted in a series of mildly
comical commercials aimed at promoting the book, Nicholas’
innocence and eventually his release.

There are 5 main characters in the commercial (I’ve assigned
the actor’s names in order to give a better understanding of
the scenes)
1)Janet – The Barnes & Nobles store clerk.
2)Lisa – The customer that purchases My Side of The Story.
3)Agent Michael Smith 4)Agent Brian Peters – The two agents
responsible for stopping people from reading the book.
5)Mary-Ann – lady with dog. All actors in the commercial are
White. Everyone is between the ages of 25-40, except lady with
dog who’s over 65. Lisa, who just purchased a copy of My Side
of The Story, is unknowingly being followed by Agents Smith
and Peters, who are trying to steal Lisa’s book so that she
doesn’t read it. Here are the scenes:

SCENE 1
Scene 1 starts with a two second shot of the outside of a
Barnes & Noble bookstore, the shot should include the Barnes
& Noble sign and the doorway into the store.

SCENE 2
Scene 1 pans into scene 2, which shows Lisa standing at the
cash register. She is exchanging smiles and small talk with
Janet, the cashier. Janet is printing out Lisa’s receipt, as
she has just purchased a copy of My Side of The Story. Janet
hands Lisa the receipt and the book (as she hands Lisa the
book over the counter, the camera should catch a 1 or 2
second slow motion shot of the book’s cover) and Lisa places
the items in her bag/pocketbook, before walking out the store
smiling and waving good-bye to Janet.

SCENE 3
While Lisa is inside the store talking with Janet, Agents’
Smith and Peters are outside the store looking through the
glass window. They see that Lisa just purchased a copy of the
book and they are trying to figure out a way to get the book
from her? Agent Peters is scratching his head, while Agent
Smith is rubbing his chin. They stare at Lisa and Janet for a
while, until Agent Smith notices Lisa is coming out of the
store. Smith alerts Peters by tapping him on the shoulder and
then pulling him behind a wall so Lisa can’t see them. They
both peak from behind the wall to watch Lisa leave.

SCENE 4
Lisa is walking down a city street, on her way home from the
book store. Behind her, you can see that Smith and Peters are
following her, about 25 – 30 feet in the distance. Lisa turn’s
around for a second, as a friend calls her name to say hello.
As the Agents see Lisa turn in their direction to wave hello to
her friend (the friend should be standing behind Smith and Peters
so Lisa has to look past them to see her friend) they try to act
like they’re not following Lisa, by looking around, whistling,
pointing at something across the street, talking to each other,
etc. . . In essence, the Agents are doing a bad job of being
“undercover”.

SCENE 5
Lisa continues her walk down the street, and the Agents follow.
When Lisa gets to the intersection, she sees Mary-Ann. The two
ladies smile and chat as they wait for the green light to cross
the street. Lisa sees that Mary-Ann is carrying her little dog in
her bag, and she rubs his head briefly, then goes back to chatting
with Mary-Ann. By now, Agents Smith and Peters are standing directly
behind Lisa and Mary-Ann, acting as if they’re waiting to cross the
street. The book is half-way sticking out of Lisa’s bag, and Smith
nudges Peters that he should try to steal it. Smith looks around and
then reaches his hand next to Lisa’s bag to get the book. Mary-Ann’s
dog sees this, and snaps at Peter’s hand. Peters pulls his hand back
quickly and grabs Smith, while looking at the dog with a scared face.
Mary-Ann and Lisa are still chatting, unaware of what just happened.
The light turns green and they cross the street.

SCENE 6
Lisa continues her walk home with Smith and Peters still following
her. As she reaches her Apt. complex, she stops in the lobby to
pick up her mail. The Agents are standing behind a tree, looking
at Lisa through the glass doors. Smith notices that the door is
still open and he nudges Peters that he should try to catch the
door when Lisa releases it to let it shut. Lisa puts her mail in
her bag, releases the door stop to close the door and then heads
off to her Apt. The door closes slowly and Peters runs over to
catch it before it shuts. He gets there just in time for the door
to slam in his face. He turns around, holding his nose as if the
door just hit him in the face. Smith comes over and smacks him in
the back of the head, grueling him because he let the door slam.
Just then, the sprinkler system comes on and both men get wet.
They run from the water.

SCENE 7
The Agents are in back of Lisa’s Apt. Complex. They’re looking
through Lisa’s window. They see Lisa come in her living room,
lay down on her couch and start to read the book. The men have a
look of defeat and disappointment on their face. Smith says to
Peters “We’ve gotta stop people from reading this book.” Peters
responds “Yeah, I know” Smith’s phone beeps alerting him that he
has an important text message. He looks at the screen and then
shouts to Peters “Another book sale in Midtown, Come on, we gotta
go!”

NOTES ON CONCLUSION
The scenes don’t have to go exactly the way I envision it. If you
must change things around to make it a simpler, inexpensive
project, that’s fine. For instance, if it’s easier for you to
have Lisa walk into a house than an Apt. complex, then that’s
fine, ok.

The entire scene has to be about 26 seconds, with 3 seconds left
over for the conclusion (see below). The whole commercial, with
conclusion, must be 29 seconds. If you have ideas you wanna add
to the commercial, that’s fine too, just as long as the basic
concept stays the same. The first scenes must be shot at Barnes &
Noble (or some big bookstore) because I’m trying to get them to
pay for the commercial.

CONCLUSION/EDITING
Background Music: If you go to my website
www.FREENicholasZimmerman.com and click on the “My CD” page, you
will see a song called “Get Wit You”. That song should play in the
background from the beginning of the commercial, all the way up
until the beginning of Scene 4. At the very beginning of Scene 4,
the Mission Impossible theme music should play (this background
music is perfect for the scene, because it was used in the Mission
Impossible movie while they was on an undercover mission, and the
Agents in the commercial are supposed to be on an “undercover
mission”) This theme music should play for the remainder of the
commercial, all the way until Scene 7. The music should stop
playing (or get very low) in Scene 7 where the Agents starts to
talk to each other, as soon as they’re done talking, the music
should pick back up. The music should play for the rest of the
commercial.
